Here's a collage inspired by the beautiful range of natural colors seen recently among fallen leaves on a Century City sidewalk. The other elements are the kinds of materials and finishes that we love integrating into our projects. PDA's architectural sample library is reaching new heights of organization and accessibility as we install it in a wall-mounted storage and display system. That process has enabled us to readily bring out tiles, stone samples, a wide range of wood types and finishes, decorative hardware, and other building elements for possible use in our projects. We delight in the use of natural materials and rich textures; both help spaces of all types be welcoming and warm. Please drop by for a look!

Not all swimming pools are in the ground! This rooftop retreat in Rancho Park is inspired by the client's love for island resort living. Its "zero depth entry" creates the sense of a tropical sandy beach. PDA is in plan check now for this project, and very excited to see it move into construction in the coming months. Our design and technical partners on this ambitious installation are the expert water-feature consultants @watershapecom and project style guru Sally Drennon. @cwhowe_engineering are our skilled engineers for the project overall. Thanks to you all, and to our wonderful sun-loving clients! :)

PDA is always delighted to incorporate beautiful swimming pools into our residential designs. This Sullivan Canyon project is an example. Here we designed a thorough expansion and renovation of an existing pool, complete with a raised sun terrace incorporating salvaged terra cotta tiles from an original patio. Elegant waterline tiles are from @heathceramics The design also features board-formed concrete planters, fountains, and a fire feature. All this only a stone's throw from Sunset Blvd., but you would never know it!

PDA's work on the great waterfront Ladd & Kelsey dining pavilion (originally the splendid "Stuft Shirt" steak and lobster restaurant when it opened in 1961) was awarded a California Preservation Foundation Design Award as well as the OC AIA "25 Year Award". This remarkable structure now houses A'maree's - perhaps SoCal's most distinctive and elegant fashion boutique! Visit them on PCH if you would enjoy seeing 8,400 sf of fashion + lifestyle paradise, in a stunning waterfront setting. Apart from Louis Khan's masterful Salk Institute in La Jolla, we know of no more dramatic coastal space... (photo credit: the very talented @johnellisphoto thanks, John!)

“Stairway to the Venice Skyline!” (Which some

“Stairway to the Venice Skyline!” (Which some might consider Heaven 🙂 - PDA’s Sanborn House project has gotten its first two coats of stucco, which is exciting! The finish coat will be integrally pigmented, which saves on paint cost. More importantly, its hand-application and varied texture/tone will contribute to the “warm modern” tactile feeling we are aiming for here. There seem to be a few too many crisp, white, modern “boxy” houses in LA right now!
The second image shows the double- height shaded outdoor courtyard off the kitchen at the rear of the home. It will benefit from plants - not much longer now. For the moment, it’s positively Piranesian, yes? Continued thanks to our GC partners here, @epicconstruction!

Here’s a “work-in-progress” look at PDA’s new terrazzo-topped “piano bar” (ie a bar shaped vaguely like a baby grand)! This svelte element is newly in place as a component of PDA’s Cor-10 steel-clad outdoor kitchen in the pretty courtyard of our Sullivan Canyon house/ranch project. We believe that many years of convivial living will happen here, for our dear clients and their fortunate friends. Thanks to @epicconstruction for the craft and care that has gone into this handsome work. And to @coloroperation, whose eagle eye on site is vital to it all coming together!

PDA visited Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. Six former US military barracks buildings now contain light-and-space installations by Dan Flavin. Each building is wrapped around three sides of an open landscaped courtyard. There are a variety of plants and trees. This tree seems particularly to flourish in its setting!

Rendering showing PDA’s New Sanborn house, now under construction just off the Venice Canals in WLA. This lot is almost twice the size of typical canals lots, allowing for real gardens and open outdoor living space. Streets and alley on 3 sides make for maximum light, air, and separation from neighbors. And future residents will enjoy a 5-minute stroll to the beach! Sunset views from the spacious roof deck, as well.

We are readying for stucco with ace builders @epicconstruction. Stay tuned for more on this project. We are excited to see it becoming a wonderful new home!

At this COVID-saturated freaky time, let’s Be The Rooster! This means: be tough and persist in doing what it takes! Wear your KN-95 mask and get boosted! Stay home if you can! Maybe just for a little while longer…
Will most or all of us eventually get some version of the infection? Probably. But spreading it out over time is hugely helpful to our schools and our heroic, dedicated (and exhausted) health-care workers. Thank you for your attention to this brief PDA public service announcement!

This Uranium Glass chandelier in the lobby of Kans

This Uranium Glass chandelier in the lobby of Kansas City’s 21C Museum Hotel (formerly the Savoy Hotel & Grill, dating from 1890) is part of a spectacular 31-fixture sculpture by Australia-based Japanese artists Ken + Julia Yonetani (“Crystal Palace, 1 of 31, the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nuclear Nations - USA”, 2013). This work is in response to the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster; the “USA” chandelier is the largest, given our greatest number of operating nuclear plants. Overall, its presence here is testimony to Kansas City’s vibrant culture, and the vision and curatorial prowess of 21C Museum Hotel founders Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson. There are 9 of these Hotels in the great American Southeast. PDA recommends the 21C for your upcoming KC visit!

This glowing spider-like installation on the ceiling of SLAP’s BBQ in Kansas City, KS is actually a cluster of “linesets” supplying coolant to energy-efficient ductless split-system HVAC units in the main serving space at this world-famous eatery. “Ductless Mini-split” heat pumps are an effective way to heat and cool small spaces and renovations where full integration of concealed ducting is a challenge. Note that one of the wall unit “cassettes” is semi-hidden behind art (in this case, a rendition of Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” - so funny to see here)!
PDA strongly recommends S.L.A.P’s BBQ (Yep, stands for “Squeal Like a Pig”; don’t miss the “burnt ends”) and energy-efficient mechanical systems. By the way, we always conceal the linesets - you will not see them in your new home, office, or retail establishment!
