Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are mini-homes that California residents are now permitted to build in their backyards, or inside their existing single-family residences. ADUs can also be additions to homes, or created through converting existing garages. Paul Davis Architects recently had the pleasure of being asked to be the guest speaker at an event hosted by prominent local realtor (and neighbor of PDA), Heyler Realty, about all things ADU-related in Los Angeles. Given that we love our neighbors and that we know a whole lot about ADUs, this was a wonderful opportunity to share the benefits of this smart and relatively affordable real estate investment.
Currently, Los Angeles is in a housing shortage. Homeowners can not only increase their property value by adding an ADU, they can also help the community. The extra space created through building an ADU is perfect for housing young adult children who are just starting out, keeping aging parents close by, realizing passive rental income, or simply enjoying as a guest house, workout/yoga area, or office space. PDA can help owners design a space to best suit their needs in addition to navigating the city permit process, contractor selection, and helping to ensure a successful construction phase.
Overall, 20+ in-person and online attendees felt that the event was successful and informative. For PDA, it was a great way to further our connection with the Rancho Park community, and to collaborate with local realtors in getting the word out about how we can help homeowners build the ADU of their dreams.
