Battery Park Residence

New York, NY (SDA)

Luxury in materials

This finely-crafted full renovation of a two-story Manhattan apartment celebrates dualities. Its rooms are richly appointed with warm, tactile materials in assemblages that may either bring to mind the lightness of gauze or the mass of hewn stone. Also highlighted is the capacity of a well-realized floor plan to create both intimate spaces for living and an airy expansiveness that is coveted in a dense metropolis.

Expansive yet compact

Entering at the lower level, one encounters open living space with water views. The dining and kitchen areas are designed for entertaining and flow into one another. Zebrawood cabinetry lends a dynamic graphic quality to the open kitchen, while a blackened steel open-mesh screen provides a visual separation from the living area.

A new cast-in-place board-formed concrete stair with blackened steel railings ascends to private portions of the home above. The double-height stair volume is filled with light from large windows overhead.

A refuge in the metropolis

An office opens onto the stair mezzanine at the second level, and an adjacent lounge offers cozy movie-watching space. The macassar ebony-clad television wall becomes storage for the master suite on its reverse side.

Large sliding glass partitions bring light into a pair of spacious bathrooms adjacent to the bright master bedroom. Stairs ascending at the exterior at this level lead to a roof deck above, which provides incredible views of the southern tip of Manhattan.
