Spirit of the West lives on

Following the recommendation of a neighboring Sullivan Canyon client, PDA was retained by a dedicated equestrienne to develop a personal horse ranch on a nearly 1-acre site in Brentwood. The resulting project features a single family home with 2nd-floor guest suite, ranch office, barn with hay loft, tack room, and wash stations, and 6 horse stalls in a detached stable building.

 

The property carries on the spirit of an original Cliff May ranch house, which had served previous owners well since the 1950’s, but had fallen into disrepair. The project’s design features dignified low-slung ranch-style buildings of modest scale, much as this neighborhood was originally conceived by May and his associates. This is accomplished while providing professional-grade horse-keeping and riding facilities.

Glory of an ancient sycamore

The home and associated corrals were positioned to preserve a towering Sycamore tree on the property’s edge. Children play in a lawn area at its feet, keen to take their next ride on a beautiful stallion or mare.

Bring your six-horse gooseneck!

The ample motor court accommodates the largest horse trailers, and motorized rolling gates lead to the adjacent street, where horses and riders are often seen parading each other down the block to West LA’s equestrian paradise, the Sullivan Canyon Preservation Association’s historic riding park.

Masterful Stalls

PDA collaborated with barn/stall supplier MD Barnmaster in developing cost-effective modular stall components (stall fronts, wall panels, Dutch and sliding doors, etc.) for installation within the custom-built horse barn structure. The result is a highly functional facility that is fully integrated into the consistent architecture of the site. The “shedrow barn” form seen here is appreciated for its excellent ventilation, as fresh air is available from each end of all stalls. Ample daylight and views help keep the horses content and refreshed.
